These islands are the above-water manifestations of the Bonacca Ridge which forms the edge of the Honduran continental shelf and parallels a deep ocean trench, creating an exhilarating section of the Great Western Barrier Reef. Quench your most dire tropical cravings through these emerald islands with white Sandy beaches that fringe the turquoise and indigo waters.

The Bay Islands are located approximately 40 miles north of Honduras in the Caribbean. Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands, measuring 29 miles long and 2 miles wide. With a tropical mountainous terrain over-looking the dramatic shore coastline and beautiful sandy beaches, interrupted only occasionally by small villages, Roatan offers the ultimate vacation experience.

Just a short distance off shore, it is the world's second largest barrier reef that has made Roatan famous with divers. The average temperature in Roatan is an unbelievable 80° F with the trade winds providing a gentle breeze. Even in the rainy season the weather in Roatan can be compared to that of Florida; periodic showers with plenty of Sun. This rain rarely compromises the diving.

Current Weather - Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras

The island has a modern airport, phones, faxes, and paved road; however, Roatan is still laid-back! There are no shopping malls or fancy nightclubs. What Roatan can offer are quiet mornings with a cup of coffee, relaxation by the water with a tropical drink, and of course, diving!

For those of you who cannot be away from the real world for too long, Roatan has opened it's very own "cybercafe". A small, friendly, roadside cafe where you can send and recieve email, faxes, personal calls, etc. All while enjoying a strong cup of Honduran coffee, or an herbal concoction brewed by the cybercafe's proprietors! The following are the prices for the rental of our cabana. Prices are for rental of Cabana for a certain time period regardless of number of people. In other words the prices are not "per person".

Sandy Bay Location
( Located on the North Side Nr. Wrasse Hole offshore)

Underwater cliffs, snorkeling, hard corals and sponges, Divers, reef and pelagic fishes

Roatan Island is just a two hour flight from Miami, Houston or New Orleans and can be reached from many other locations on such airlines as Lacsa, TACA, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Alitalia, Continental, American. Roatan offers vacationers a wide variety of activities to enhance their vacation experience.

English is so widely spoken in the Islands, that some island natives don't even speak Spanish, despite the fact that this is the official language of Honduras!

Sandy Bay is the cultural center of Roatan. It is here where the Institute of Marine Sciences, The Roatan Museum, the Carambola Gardens and Marine Reserve are located.

This small community, located, as its name appropriately states, on a sandy bay offers a lot to do, and whether you are planning to spend your vacation on Roatan in this part of the Island or not, you should definitely plan on visiting the area and its attractions.

What to see and do
( Just a few of the local attractions )

The Roatan Museum is open from Thursday to Tuesday. There is an entrance fee for everyone not a guest at the Anthony's Key Resort. Entrance fee is $4 US dollars. The Institute of Marine Sciences has dolphin encounter shows regularly. On weekdays, the show is at 10:00 a.m. and at 3:00 p.m.

On weekends there are three shows, at 10:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The entrance fee for the show is also $4 US dollars per person. There are no shows on Wednesday.

Follow the footsteps of Christopher Columbus, in 1502, on his fourth voyage to the new world, and discover the Bay Islands of Honduras! The Islas de la Bahia are known worldwide as one of the favorite diving sites for both novice and expert divers alike. It is not necessary to be an expert diver to experience the paradise these waters provide!

World class diving, beautiful botanical gardens, a bird sanctuary housing an enormous collection of exotic and tropical birds, a dolphin facility where you can swim with dolphins or take part in a 3 day dolphin trainer program, horseback riding through the shallow water on a deserted beach, and many scenic hiking trails along white sandy beaches and tropical hillsides are just a few of the things Roatan has to offer.

The Diving
( World class spectacular underwater experience )

The diving !! What to say except uniquely spectacular ! Reminiscent of Hawai or the South Pacific (the weather here more similar to Hawai than the Caribbean. 80 degrees year round, very dry, and constant cool trade winds).

Approximately 96% of all species of Caribbean marine life, ranging from flecks of fluorescent organisms to the grandeur of the whale shark, the largest undersea inhabitant in the world, have been observed in the waters neighboring Roatan. Underwater terrain exploration is a spectrum of reefs grooved by angled chutes dropping to the sand. Tunnels, ledges and volcanic mazes extend far into the coral walls forming caverns and cathedrals. Underwater cliffs are draped with kaleidoscope of hard corals and sponges. Divers are treated to a dizzying array of reef and pelagic fishes, and because a drop-off is always close, deep water species like dolphins, manta and eagle rays are prevalent.

The majority of dives are made conveniently from boat moors from a few yards to 140 yards offshore. Luckily some of the best reefs on Roatan are a few fin kicks from the shore. Put on the mask, fins, and snorkel and in a matter of seconds you’re in an underwater fantasy. Tame enough for the faintest of tourists, yet still wonderfully wild, Roatan (and the other bay islands Guanaja, Utila and the Cayos Cochinos) defy any attempt to dissect, label and classify them. Instead, they revel in a diversity of topside and diving experiences that include shallow fringing reefs, plunging walls and isolated seamounts.

Add in bargain prices and an astonishing range of Caribbean marine life and it's easy to see why these Central American islands are one of the Caribbean's must-see destinations. At once modern and primordial, Honduras's Bay Islands shift effortlessly between extremes: Small motor boats share waterways with dugout cayucos; tranquil sandy beaches mesh with dense green peaks; and civilized resorts are embraced by native jungle.

The Culture
( The people, the place, the culture, the climate )

Roatan is a true Caribbean treasure, appealing to vacationers, divers, part-time residents, retirees, and others. Let the unhurried pace relax you -- unwind to "island time" and chill out in the sparkling, clear blue waters.

Roatan's warm climate is like the warm greeting you'll receive from the friendly inhabitants, whose ancestral origins are a combination of eight separate cultures that fought and flourished here during the past 400 years. Their colorful history reflects the cultural crossroads from which these islands derive their unique character. Roatan is the most developed of the Bay Islands, with a new airport terminal, paved roads and modern supermarkets.

Although far from cosmopolitan, Roatan has a 20-bed general hospital, a hyperbaric decompression chamber, 24-hour emergency and ambulance service, a number of restaurants, and Roatan Museum, renowned as the finest small museum in Central America.

There's nothing like a walk on Roatan's West Bay Beach, one of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean. And, you won't want to miss the underwater gardens. An extensive fringing reef system offers spectacular diving and snorkeling among a myriad of invertebrates (some as yet unnamed), countless hard and soft corals, and a profusion of sponges, and or course fish. A drive toward the east end of the island never fails to thrill. Breathtaking views overlooking both shores -- green, green hills gently sloping to brilliant reefs -- are unforgettable.
